‘Who Knows More About Szentendre?’ A Competition on Local History for Primary School Students

On Wednesday, 20 March 2024, a competition on local history was organised in Szentendre for the upper classes of eight local primary schools. On the initiative of the originator of the programme, the Ferenczy Museum, pupils were measured up against one another on their knowledge of local history by means of quiz items, while certain questions also concentrated on the cultural heritage of Hungary’s Serbs.

Thus, the various questions to be answered by the participants of the quiz at the Serbian Church Museum, concerned topics such as the Great Exodus of the Serbs under Patriarch Arsenije III Čarnojević, the settlement of the Serbs in Szentendre or the construction of Serbian churches during the 18th century. Byzantine influence on medieval and modern Serbian art, as well as stylistic novelties emerging in the course of the 18th century, were identified. Among other things, the competition was aimed at ensuring that, apart from Hungarian history and cultural heritage, primary school students would become acquainted with the Serbian monuments and cultural legacy of Szentendre.
